Erzsébetváros grew up around the former Jewish Quarter, where the Dohány Street Synagogue and ruin bars such as Szimpla Kert sit side by side. The district is densely populated, with older apartment blocks in various stages of renovation, and has a young, international atmosphere. It is calmer by day but becomes one of the liveliest parts of the city in the evenings and at weekends.

The district is served by the M2 metro around Astoria and Blaha Lujza tér, plus a dense tram and bus network, with the city centre and Keleti railway station both within walking distance.
